How Botox Works

Botox is a medication derived from a naturally occurring bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. Classed as a neurotoxin, it disrupts the chemical signals transmitted by nerves—specifically, those responsible for contracting facial muscles that cause wrinkles to form. When wrinkle-forming muscles relax, they allow the surface layer of the skin to lie smooth, temporarily reducing or eliminating crow’s feet, worry lines, marionette lines, and more.

FDA-approved for the treatment of frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet in adult patients, Botox injections are also commonly administered off-label to treat wrinkles in other areas of the face or to re-shape the upper lip (sometimes referred to as a “lip flip”). They can also be used to treat muscle spasms, migraine headaches, and excessive underarm sweating.

Botox injections are administered on-site at both our Dermatology Institute and Laser Center clinic locations (Clifton and North Bergen). The procedure is often completed within 15 minutes or less with little to no recovery period after treatment. Botox injections can be administered on their own or in combination with other cosmetic treatments, such as fillers. The cosmetic effects of Botox last for approximately 3-5 months.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox?

Generally speaking, most patients wishing to address facial lines and wrinkles with Botox are good candidates for the procedure. That being said, our professional team will carefully assess any factors that may make you an unsuitable candidate. Botox may not be recommended for women who are pregnant/breastfeeding or for patients living with certain medical conditions or taking specific medications.

If our team of doctors feels that Botox is not the best treatment option for your particular needs and circumstances, we will develop an alternative treatment plan to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

Botox Treatment: What To Expect

At your initial consultation, Dr. Ros and the Dermatology Institute and Laser Center team will spend time getting to know you, understanding your cosmetic goals, and determining whether or not you are a good candidate for injectable Botox treatment. In straightforward cases, you may be able to receive one or more injections at your consultation appointment, but a separate treatment appointment may also be recommended, particularly if Botox injections will be administered in combination with other cosmetic treatments.

Many patients receive Botox injections without any numbing, but a topical anesthetic may be applied to the injection area(s) to increase the comfort of the procedure if you prefer. The injections themselves take just a few minutes, after which you should be able to return to your regular routine.

FAQ

Over time, the skin begins to age. Collagen levels drop as does the amount of oil produced by sebaceous glands. As facial skin loses its elasticity and ability to bounce back, dynamic wrinkles begin to appear. Wrinkles and lines may also be caused by sun exposure, smoking, and other environmental factors that damage skin cells.
Generally speaking, cosmetic Botox treatments last for approximately 3-5 months, at which point it’s time to return for another injection.

When administered by a skilled dermatologist, Botox is generally a safe and effective cosmetic treatment without long-lasting impacts on the body. That being said, some patients may experience mild injection site reactions, which usually resolve within a day or two after the procedure.
Occasionally, as with any medication, patients may experience a negative reaction to Botox. Contact your doctor or seek medical assistance immediately if you experience any of the following after receiving a Botox injection:

  • Crooked or drooping facial muscles
  • Muscle weakness
  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Loss of bladder control

Before receiving a Botox injection, be sure to disclose all medications you are currently taking as well as any allergies or pre-existing medical conditions to your dermatologist.

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau are all injectable botulinum toxin treatments used for similar cosmetic dermatological purposes. For some patients, one treatment may be more effective or cause fewer reactions than another. Often, Dysport is more economical than Botox, but this depends on many factors including your insurance coverage and where you are accessing treatment.
