How Radiesse Works

As collagen and elastin production decrease over time due to aging or other conditions, sagging skin and volume loss often occur. Radiesse injections address such cosmetic concerns by filling gaps that have developed under the skin and restoring natural smoothness, fullness, and firmness.

Instead of the hyaluronic acid found in popular injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm, Radiesse instead contains calcium hydroxylapatite as its active ingredient. Microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a naturally-occurring compound found in bones and teeth, are suspended in a water-based gel which, when injected into targeted subdermal areas, immediately enhances volume and provides structural scaffolding for collagen fibers. Radiesse is uniquely formulated to promote collagen production and, even after it is absorbed into the body over a period of several months, leaves behind long-lasting collagen structures that continue to actively renew and strengthen your skin from the inside out.

Radiesse was first approved by the FDA in 2006 for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and facial lipoatrophy (localized fat tissue loss). At the Dermatology Institute and Laser Center, this popular filler is used to address an array of signs of aging including fine lines, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, facial volume loss, and more. It may also be used to treat volume loss in other areas of the body, including the hands. Contact our office directly to book an appointment and learn more!

  • The treatment area is cleansed.
  • Topical anesthetic or ice may be applied. In some cases, lidocaine may be mixed with Radiesse to increase the comfort of the treatment.
  • Injections are precisely administered using an ultra-fine needle.
  • Patients can usually return to their regular activities immediately after treatment with no downtime required.
  • Total treatment time is usually less than half an hour (often much less).

Recovery and Results

Dr. Ros will provide you with clear instructions following your Radiesse treatment. In general, it is recommended to refrain from strenuous exercise and avoid disturbing the treatment area in the first 24 hours. Minor bruising occasionally occurs at the injection site but typically resolves within a few days. If you have any questions or experience any unexpected side effects, our team is always available to assist you.

Patients can expect to notice an immediate cosmetic improvement within 4-7 days after treatment as well as ongoing progressive changes as Radiesse continues to stimulate collagen production over time.

FAQ

The cost of Radiesse treatments depends on how many units are used. Dr. Ros will be able to provide a more accurate pricing estimate after evaluating the location and scope of the treatment area. Radiesse injections will not be administered until the cost of treatment has been clearly communicated.

The length of time Radiesse lasts depends on a variety of factors including your age, lifestyle, skin health, and the location of the treatment area. That being said, Radiesse is a long-lasting dermal filler and many patients find that they can go 12-18 months or even longer between treatments.

Radiesse is a safe and effective cosmetic treatment and the incidence of long-lasting effects is extremely low. As with any treatment, however, risks do exist. Book an appointment to learn more and discuss any specific questions or concerns directly with Dr. Ros.
