How Fraxel® Laser Treatment Works

Fraxel® laser treatment is a revolutionary skin resurfacing procedure that uses extremely narrow laser beams to precisely target damaged skin cells. It is non-ablative, meaning it does not remove any of the skin’s uppermost layers, and only targets minute treatment areas known as microthermal treatment zones (MTZs), leaving the surrounding skin tissue completely untouched.

Fraxel® lasers penetrate deeply into the skin, causing microscopic injuries that trigger the body’s natural healing processes and stimulate new cell growth and collagen production. For some patients, a single Fraxel® treatment may be sufficient, but Dr. Ros more frequently recommends between 3-5 treatments to achieve lasting cosmetic outcomes.

Conditions Treated

Fraxel® laser treatment is a highly versatile procedure that can be used to effectively address many types of mild to moderate skin damage. At Dermatology Institute and Laser Center, we often recommend it for:

  • Reducing acne scarring, surgical scars, or traumatic scars
  • Lightening/removing age spots and sun spots
  • Smoothing mild lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Shrinking enlarged pores
  • Reducing/eliminating stretch marks
  • Treating areas of irregular pigmentation to achieve consistent skin tone and texture

If you’ve already tried other non-ablative treatments without success, Fraxel® may be the laser that can help you finally achieve your cosmetic goals!

Benefits Of Fraxel® Laser Treatment

Fraxel® laser skin resurfacing is a treatment with many unique benefits. These include:

  • Non-Surgical and Minimal Downtime – Fraxel® treatment is minimally invasive and most patients can return to all of their normal daily activities within a few days or less.
  • Highly Targeted – Fraxel® laser technology is extremely precise, targeting only specific treatment areas and leaving surrounding skin tissue undamaged.
  • Non-Ablative – Fraxel® laser technology targets deeper layers of the skin, leaving the uppermost layers completely intact.
  • Healthy, Glowing Skin – Fraxel® treatment rejuvenates skin and brightens the complexion for a more even and youthful appearance.

Good Candidates For Fraxel® Laser Treatment

If you are in good overall health and looking to address mild to moderate skin damage, you may be an excellent candidate for Fraxel® laser treatment.

You may not be a good candidate for Fraxel® treatment if:

  • You have active acne
  • You are hoping to smooth deep wrinkles
  • You have a history of certain skin conditions or skin cancer
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

If Dr. Ros does not feel that Fraxel® treatment is the right option for your needs, she will offer an alternative treatment option to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

Dr. Ros will provide clear instructions for you to follow as you prepare for your Fraxel® laser treatment. These may include avoiding sun exposure, certain skincare products, certain medications, alcohol, and/or tobacco. If you have specific questions along the way, our dedicated team is always available to answer them with the utmost warmth and professionalism.

Length Of Treatment & Recovery

During Fraxel® laser treatment, your safety and comfort are our top priorities. To begin with, the treatment area will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic may be used, depending on the circumstances. Next, gel will be applied and Dr. Ros will pass the Fraxel® laser across the treatment area in even, overlapping strokes. Fraxel® treatment typically lasts anywhere between 15 minutes and 1 hour.

Following treatment, patients can go home right away. A mild sunburn sensation may be felt for the first hour or so and the treatment area may be pink and/or swollen for a few days afterwards. During the first week, patients may also experience symptoms including itching, flaking, and dryness, which can usually be easily managed.

The results of Fraxel® laser treatment are immediately noticeable but will continue to improve for the first 3-6 months. The procedure may be repeated at approximately 4-week intervals, as recommended by Dr. Ros, to achieve the most optimal outcomes possible.

Potential Side Effects & Safety Considerations

Fraxel® laser resurfacing is FDA-approved and considered a safe and effective treatment option. As with any treatment, however, there is the potential risk of side effects. These may include:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Flaking
  • Bronzing
  • Infection, scarring, hyperpigmentation (very rare)
