What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Also sometimes referred to as laser peel or laser vaporization, laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic dermatology technique that uses laser technology to reduce facial wrinkles, even out skin coloration, tighten skin, remove scars and blemishes, remove tattoos, and much more. Treatment areas are precisely targeted with concentrated light energy that vaporizes damaged layers of skin and leads to a rejuvenated appearance.

During laser skin resurfacing, the outermost layers of the skin (the epidermis) are carefully removed, while the underlying layers (known as the dermis) are heated. This deep heating stimulates collagen production and leads to the formation of new layers of smoother, more elastic, and healthier skin.

After laser treatment, the outer layer of damaged skin may peel off to reveal new skin beneath. Initially, this new skin may be pink or red, but will soon become firm and take on a natural pigment tone that will provide a healthy, uniform appearance over the long term.

Laser skin resurfacing can be used to treat a wide array of different blemishes and skin conditions including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Color inconsistencies
  • Enlarged oil glands in the nose
  • Skin that is non-responsive after a facelift procedure

  • Versatile – From lines and wrinkles to scars, birthmarks, and much more, laser skin resurfacing can be used to effectively treat a wide range of different cosmetic issues.
  • Minimal Downtime – Depending on the scope of the laser skin resurfacing treatment you undergo, some downtime may be required. That being said, you’ll be back to your normal routine within a short period of time—and with a stunning new complexion.

Types of Laser Resurfacing Treatments

At the Dermatology Institute and Laser Center, our experienced dermatology team will take the time to thoroughly understand your medical history, current health status, and treatment goals before developing a personalized treatment plan to meet your needs. The type of laser resurfacing we recommend for you will depend on multiple factors but may include ablative laser resurfacing, non-ablative laser resurfacing, or fractional laser resurfacing:

Ablative Laser Resurfacing – This type of laser resurfacing uses intense pulsed light to remove the outermost layer of skin and heat the underlying layers of skin beneath, promoting elasticity and healthy skin growth. Some recovery is typically required after an ablative laser resurfacing procedure, but the results can last for many years.

Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing – In non-ablative laser resurfacing, the top layer of skin is not removed but the deeper layers of skin are still targeted. This procedure requires minimal downtime, but multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results. Non-ablative laser resurfacing may be recommended to address fine lines, mild wrinkles, and textural irregularities in the skin.

Fractional Laser Resurfacing – Fractional laser resurfacing uses multiple columns of light to precisely target small areas of the skin and create tiny wounds that activate the body’s natural healing process. It can dramatically improve the appearance of the skin and may be effective in the treatment of various skin concerns.

What To Expect From Treatment

Laser skin resurfacing appointments range from short sessions that target very small areas of skin to entire facial treatments that may last an hour or more. Depending on the location and scope of the laser treatment being performed, you may be numbed with topical anesthetic or sedated to enhance your comfort during the procedure. All laser treatments are performed on-site at Dermatology Institute and Laser Center using the very latest in laser technology.

Recovery and Results

Immediately following laser resurfacing, you may need to take special care in cleansing and applying ointments to the treated area, as recommended by Dr. Ros. It will also be important to avoid sun exposure, stay well hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities.

The length of the recovery period after laser skin resurfacing depends on a variety of factors, but typically takes between 1-3 weeks. After that, some redness may persist (which can be covered with makeup) but should fade over a period of a few months leaving skin smooth, firm, and rejuvenated.

The results of laser skin resurfacing can last for years and the procedure can be repeated as necessary if new wrinkles or blemishes develop.

  • Infection
  • Swelling
  • Scarring (extremely rare)
