Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin condition that can sometimes be mistaken for acne, other skin problems or natural ruddiness – and is characterized by blushing or flushing and visible blood vessels in your face, as well as small, pus-filled bumps. Although the exact cause of rosacea is not known, it is believed that rosacea is caused by a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. In addition, there are certain factors that can trigger rosacea in some people by increasing blood flow to the surface of the skin – with some triggers including hot foods or beverages, spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures, sunlight, stress, anger or embarrassment, as well as certain medications. Rosacea is not contagious, and is most common in those with fair skin. If left undiagnosed and untreated, rosacea can worsen over time.

If you are experiencing redness of the face it is important to have it examined and evaluated, since there are several possible conditions that can cause this (some of which may be serious) and early evaluation and treatment can make a big difference in treatment of the condition. Although there is no cure for rosacea, there are a number of treatments that a dermatologist can offer that can effectively manage the symptoms. In addition to effective prescription topical medications, oral antibiotics and laser treatments, there are a number of other new treatments available for rosacea that that can reduce redness and enhance your overall appearance. In addition, Dr. Ros can work with you on incorporating important lifestyle changes to manage rosacea, including avoiding factors that aggravate the condition, such as emotional stress, sunlight, hot beverages, spicy foods, alcohol, and extreme temperatures.
