Kybella®

Are you frustrated with stubborn submental fat (commonly known as a double chin) that makes you look older and heavier than you really are? Have lifestyle changes like a healthy diet, exercise, and weight loss made little to no difference?

If you answered yes to both of these questions, Kybella® injections may offer a safe, effective, and minimally invasive solution that will allow you to achieve the contoured jawline you desire.

At Dermatology Institute and Laser Center, Dr. Ros and our world-class team tailor Kybella® treatments to the unique needs and cosmetic goals of each patient. We possess the experience and expertise to permanently reduce or eliminate submental fullness without the need for an invasive procedure or lengthy recovery period. To learn more about our innovative Kybella® treatments, contact us today to schedule an initial consultation!

What Is Kybella®?

Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable that reduces the appearance of submental fullness (or a double chin). Excess fat that accumulates under the chin and around the neck with age can add pounds and years to your face and be extremely persistent and difficult to address with lifestyle-based treatments like diet, exercise, and the maintenance of healthy body weight. By directly targeting and destroying fat cells in the neck and jaw area, Kybella® offers a cutting-edge solution. With no incisions and little to no downtime required, it provides an alternative to more invasive procedures, like liposuction or a neck/face lift.

Kybella® was approved by the FDA for the treatment of submental fat in 2015. Since then, countless individuals have benefited from safe, targeted, and effective double chin reduction/elimination. Treatment with Kybella® typically consists of a series of injections made directly into the chin/neck that may be repeated up to 3-6 times at approximately 6-week intervals. Contact Dermatology Institute and Laser Center today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Ros and learn more about how many Kybella® treatments may be recommended based on the specifics of your case.

How Kybella® Works

Kybella® contains a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule produced in the gallbladder that aids in the breakdown of dietary fat. When deoxycholic acid is injected directly into the neck/chin, it targets and permanently destroys submental fat cells. In the months following Kybella® treatment, these destroyed fat cells are completely metabolized (absorbed) by the body. For this reason, the results of Kybella® treatment tend to remain consistent over the long term and treatment does not typically need to be repeated once complete. (Significant weight gain and other factors may lead to the development of new submental fat cells and result in the need for further Kybella® treatments.)

Kybella® Benefits

Kybella® injections can have numerous benefits for patients, including the following:

  • Targeted Treatment – Kybella® is the only injectable treatment specifically engineered and approved for the elimination of submental fat. If you’re seeking a safe, precise, and effective solution for your double chin, it’s the natural choice.
  • Look Younger and Leaner – Submental fullness can make you appear heavier and older than you really are. If you are close to or at your goal weight but haven’t been able to get rid of your double chin, Kybella® injections can help you achieve a thinner, more youthful appearance.
  • Minimally Invasive – Kybella® injections are associated with fewer risks and complications than more invasive procedures like liposuction or neck lift surgery. In addition, little to no downtime is required after treatment.
  • Permanent Outcomes – While every case is unique, Kybella® injections typically do not need to be repeated over time. Deoxycholic acid targets and permanently destroys submental fat cells, resulting in a contoured jawline that should remain tight for years.

Am I A Good Candidate For Kybella®?

Before recommending Kybella® as a treatment option, Dr. Ros will take a thorough medical history and carefully assess your overall health and cosmetic goals.

You may be an excellent candidate for Kybella® treatment if:

  • You are in good health overall.
  • You are at or near your ideal body weight but have persistent fat in the neck and chin.
  • You have good skin elasticity.
  • You are contraindicated for a face/neck lift procedure and are seeking alternative treatment options.

Kybella® treatment may not be suitable for you if:

  • You are under the age of 18.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have a neck infection or difficulty swallowing.

If Dr. Ros does not feel that Kybella® injections are the right treatment option after a thorough evaluation, she will suggest alternate treatment options to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

How To Prepare For Treatment

Kybella® injections are a minimally invasive procedure and little preparation is usually required. That being said, Dr. Ros and the Dermatology Institute and Laser Center team will go over any specific instructions with you prior to your first treatment appointment. You may be asked to stop taking certain medications, including anti-inflammatories like aspirin, to reduce the risk of bleeding or other possible complications. You may also be requested to refrain from drinking wine for a day or two leading up to Kybella® treatment.

What To Expect From Treatment

Kybella® treatment usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. During this time you will be comfortably accommodated in our state-of-the-art clinic environment. Here’s what to expect:

  • Ice or a numbing agent may be applied to the treatment area to reduce pain and discomfort.
  • 20 to 50 small, targeted injections will be made under the chin.
  • Deoxycholic acid breaks down submental fat cells, allowing the body to absorb them over time.

The number of Kybella® treatment sessions required will depend on the scope and severity of your submental fullness. Multiple sessions may be scheduled approximately 6 weeks apart, with 6 treatment sessions being the maximum. Speak with Dr. Ros to learn more about the projected number of treatment sessions required based on the specifics of your case.

Recovery And Results

The primary symptoms that patients experience in the first few days following Kybella® treatment include pain, swelling, redness, bruising, and numbness near the treatment area. Little to no downtime is usually required after receiving Kybella® injections, but many patients choose to take time off in order to allow swelling to subside before returning to work and other daily routines.

Rare but severe Kybella® side effects can include facial muscle weakness, nerve injury, and difficulty swallowing. Contact Dermatology Institute and Laser Center immediately if you notice any concerning side effects after treatment.

The results of Kybella® treatment tend to appear gradually over time, becoming noticeable within 1 to 2 months after the first series of injections and increasing for up to 6 months following the final series of injections. For a more accurate recovery and results timeline based on the specifics of your case, speak directly with Dr. Ros.
