Makeup Tips for Acne-Prone Skin

Acne and makeup aren’t the best of friends. Many of our patients use makeup as a way to disguise their acne, causing clogged pores and more breakouts, which perpetuates the cycle. If you struggle with acne-prone skin, keep these tips in mind the next time you open your makeup drawer.

Choose Your Products Carefully
One of the most important tips for acne-prone skin is to choose your products carefully. Look for products that are labeled “non-comedogenic” or “oil-free.” Avoid products that contain fragrances, which can irritate acne-prone skin. When trying new products, always patch test first to ensure that they don’t cause a reaction.

Start With a Clean Canvas
Before applying any makeup, make sure your face is clean and free of oil and debris. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face and pat it dry with a clean towel. This will help to prevent makeup from trapping dirt and oil in your pores, which can lead to breakouts.

Use a Primer
A primer can help to create a smooth, even base for your makeup while also reducing the appearance of pores. Look for a primer that is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores. Avoid primers that contain silicone, which can exacerbate acne.

Choose the Right Foundation
When choosing a foundation for acne-prone skin, look for one that is oil-free and non-comedogenic. Avoid heavy, full-coverage foundations, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Instead, opt for a lightweight formula that provides coverage without suffocating your skin.

Use a Concealer
A concealer can help to hide blemishes and redness. Look for a concealer that is specifically formulated for acne-prone skin and contains salicylic acid, which can help to unclog pores and prevent breakouts. Avoid using a concealer that is too thick or heavy, as this can exacerbate acne.

Be Careful with Powders
Powders can help to set your makeup and control oil, but they can also clog pores and cause breakouts. If you do use a powder, choose a loose powder over a pressed powder, which is more likely to contain oils and other pore-clogging ingredients. Apply powder sparingly and avoid reapplying throughout the day.
